While reading blogs on the CNN website i can across an article that caught my eye at once, the article was posted as Study: Honey help's kids cough. The article was very interesting, it started out by saying a teaspoon of honey seems to help a kids cough sooth and help them sleep throughout the night. Also that for health purposes children under the age of 6 years old should NOT use cough or cold medicine because of the high risk health risks, and that parents with children of this age instead of giving them cough medicine they would advise parents to use honey. Except if you have a child of 1 years old or younger because of the obvious risk of them choking on such a thick substance, and suffocating to death.
This article is important to me because personally i don't like OTC (Over the counter) cough medicine or any type of cough and cold medicine because of the nasty taste and the fact it doesn't quite help. So from reading this next time i get a cough or a cold ill just take a teaspoon of honey or maybe more just because the stuff is so good!
This article is also important to the world because it could really help the kids of the world stay healthier, and reduce the amount of kids get even more sick by taking OTC drugs and other medicine .

PLN presentation 2 relfection

Today after presenting my 3 PLN's in front of the class i took some time to think about my presentation. After about a minute of thinking and reading every ones comments they left me, i concluded that I prepared for my presentation well, but to well. This is because i relied on my notes to much, by looking down at my paper repeatedly. All in all it was a good experience.

As usual i was reading through blogs deciding what sounds most interesting. As i went through the Cool Cat Teacher blogger, i came across a blog that i knew instantly would interest me. The tittle said What parents need to know about Xbox Live. The blog was actually quite amusing to me. The blog started off asking parents why are they complaining about students in school posting blogs, when they have no clue once they get home they start playing video games, and their precious little 8 year old annihilates a 40 year old at halo 3 unsupervised. It seems funny but if you think about it xbox live is an open place to extreme profanity, which would be way worse then them posting a harmless blog. I myself do play xbox live and have experienced what a 25 year old can say when there is a 9-11 year old playing with them, and i thought "wow this guy really doesn't care about what this kid is hearing. Should their be a age requirement for xbox live so young children don't have to experience this type of profanity?

Today while reading through a few blogs by Cool Cat Teacher, i came across an interesting title Playground Pain Limits Classroom Gain. As i read the article it started by saying how can we make sure kids are being safe with playground horseplay, especially with bullies at roam? Kids must be watched at all times of the day, and with out adults to watch them when their at play for their recess, whats going on with the bullies and if they are harming younger children and threatening them, how can they learn with them breathing down their necks?

As i was going through some blogs, i decided to look through the Cool Cat Teachers blog. As i scrolled down the page a picture instantly caught my eye, it was a blog titled If My friend Scott, a double amputee can run an Ironman, whats your exercise . There was picture of a man who was running and it seemed as if instead of having calf's like most people, he had spring like legs attached to him right below the knee. This picture intrigued me enough that i instantly started to read the blog. It was a very interesting blog. A man of the name Scott Rigsby, 39. Rigsby started this whole thing by when he was a teenager and got into a truck accident, requiring him to get a double below the knee amputations. And nearly two years ago he decided to completely dedicate himself to test his limits in major triathlon races. He now is the 1st and only person in the world to complete a triathlon with two prosthetic legs. This amazing story made me think, If a man with two prosthetic legs can go out into the world and run/bike/swim a triathlon, why are we still sitting here getting fat and lazy? If he can do those things with fake legs, we have no excuse to stay at home and do nothing.

In the Denver Post, an article stated that in Colorado Springs a board of Olympic board members will meet on Friday to discuss a proposal to provide a new office and living quarters for Olympic athletes. I think that this idea is a great idea for the city of Colorado Springs. This is because it will help raise the population and growth of Colorado, and show that statistics are right, we are the most "Fit" state in the U.S. and this proves it by saying we can hold a training center for Olympic athletes. All in all i think that this is a great idea.

Today Loveland ski and snowboard area had finally opened. The resort already has an 18inch base which is extraordinary for this time of the year. Which makes me think how do this mountains have so much snow this early in winter? The answer to this question is most of the snow is from strange cold fronts in the Rockies that have brought a ton of snow to the mountains fast and early. Also some of the snow is man made. This also makes me think how much sooner could they open ski areas and how much longer could they stay open? If you think about it if they can make enough snow to have an 18inch base, and if technology keeps advancing they could make more snow more efficiently, to open the resorts faster and keep them open longer.

Today i was reading a post by The Denver Post named 1868 Shipwreck Found Off Alaska by Jeannette J. Lee. The article stated that a private dive team has discovered the wreckage of an American ship that sank off the south-central Alaska coast 139 years ago. The ships name was later discovered as The Torrent. It sank after tidal currents smashed it into a reef. Previous records show that all 155 people on board the ship had survived. This shipwreck is the oldest found in Alaska's history, and over 2,500 ships have been recorded that have wrecked in Alaska. This discovery makes myself and hopefully the others around me, if we can find a ship that has crashed and sunk 140 years ago what else could we find?

Today i while i was rummaging through the usual blogs, i came across an interesting blog tittled Three Dead in air-ambulance crash. As i read the blog it came to be an almost terrifying article, i continued through the article and it stated that at 2:11am Friday morning an emergency helicopter had toking flight for a rescue mission, headed for Alamosa, Colorado. The weather had been horrible flying weather so it was automatically a dangerous mission, it had been raining and the clouds were at low elevation. As it headed for Alamosa it had "lost control" and crashed killing three people on board, this included: a doctor, flight nurse, and paramedic. That's when it hit me "Who was flying the helicopter?". Apparently one of the three people on board had also been flying the helicopter, which made me think was this person suited for a high risked mission flight? As i pondered for a little while i thought, maybe pilots aren't getting enough training these days. If their not suited for un-expected weather then they definitely shouldn't be flying. Currently i think that anyone who is a pilot of any type of aircraft should be required to do more then the minimum to be able to fly. This is because if aircraft personnel aren't properly trained to fly in any condition they are risking many lives of the people on board and their selves.

Today while reading a few blogs i came across a blog about using math in life by James Holman (who happens to be my Algebra 1 teacher). As i read the article it asked detailed and significantly well thought questions, like what should we be teaching? Are there subjects that should be taught to students that would be more applicable to what they are going to see in their future? etc... So i thought to my self, should math be taught in schools today and if we do when are we going to use it? So i thought deeply for a minute or to and thought, yes math should be taught in schools today because in almost any job you have in your not so distant future you use math. My brother who is studying to be a Civil Engineer, uses math every night, he says its the most important subject you could ever learn if you want to be an engineer of any type. Also i thought even the military uses math frequently in taking measurements and wind speeds all the time for more accurate bullets. All in all the overall question is a hard question to think about.

While reading a blog called Is Payment for Good Grades Legitimate Motivation in This Day and Age? It asked if payment was good motivation for kids to work hard in school and get good grades. This is a good question, but i do think that it is great motivation, mainly because if it is going to get kids to try harder in school to get good grades then it should be perfectly fine. But what they do with the money is the only problem, I'm not going to go into detail but with the money they will earn could hurt them in the long run. Personally my parents don't pay me for my grades (they have only once, just to motivate me to get them better) and i wish they did not only for the money but for my GPA.

Evaluation

After presenting my PLN in class, i think that i didn't prepare enough, by practising talking and have the materials needed, and my writing didn't have enough detail in it and could have been longer. Also i could have spoke up more and made more eye contact, and work on not saying "ummm" and "like" so much. But besides that i have learned from my mistakes and now i know how to prepare for my next presentation.

After Reading the blog 2cents worth by David Warlick, I came across a post named How Long Does It Take To Become a Tool. As I read the article it talked about how students, who were 10-12 years old, were using e-mail inappropriately, do to an unfiltered server. But as the article went on one teacher mentioned that at first it was a great idea for students to be able to use email in class, but over time she had realized that it was a bad mistake to give students such a privilege to use computers and laptops.
What Matters:
As i read the blog i thought what matters from this post, and to myself i think that what matters in this blog is that teachers are willing to give students the opportunity and privilege to extend the students learning ability by letting them use computers. But what also matters in this blog is that if students aren't mature enough to use laptops or computers they shouldn't be given the chance to use them in the first place.
How it relates to our class:
This post relates to our class more than any other blog that i have read so far this year. This is mostly because we are also using e-mail and laptops in our class. But because we are older and more mature ( but not much more mature ) then the students in the original blog, we wont be using them inappropriately, and wasting the privilege to extend our learning ability by using laptops or computers in class.

PLN week 1.4

http://www.denverpost.com/ci_6972859?source=rssWhile reading the Denver Post blog, i came across a post called Old friendships stronger then nations anger. The article talked about how a teacher from the Peace Corps is teaching Iranian students how to speak English, and how he would like to re-unite Iran and the U.S.

This matters: This matters because it shows the world that the U.S. is more then just a physical country and can handle things in more of a peaceful way. Also it shows that the U.S. cares about the education other countries get. And if kids in countries like Iran or Iraq are getting better education, their education could help their country become a success.

This doesn't really relate to what we are doing in class. But if the kids in Iran or Iraq have better education and make their country more successful then they could make more money to be able to buy laptops and improve education even more.

PLN week 1.1

In the blog The Ficschbowl, about teachers being technologaclly illiterate is a very interesting blog that has a lot of usefull information. In my eyes here is What Matters from the blog The Ficshbowl.
What matters to me in this blog mostly is how it explains how teachers who don't know how to use technology is a bad thing and that those who dont are holding students back from learning so much more than they could from a book. This matters to me because it shows me how much technology has dramaticaly improved learing.
This realates to what we're doing in class more than anything. This is because in our classroom we use laptops to help us extend our knowledge and help us learn more. Also having a teacher that knows how to work a computer well really helps when every student in the class is using a computer.
This also relates to the world. The way it relates to the world is if your using computers all through school it will eventually lead to greater education, and if you don't it will be harder once you enter the real life. This is because if you get a job and you have to use a computer and you dont know how to use a computer you'll fall behind in work, and by that time there will be someone who knows how to do their job correctly and could take your job at anytime.

PLN week 1.2

While the Denver Post blog, i came across an article called Local readers go for world record. This article started off by saying that Mayor John Hickenlooper is reading to kids in 1st grade, as the article continued they mentioned that Mayor John Hickenlooper is reading to these kids to "Jumpstart: Read for the Record".
What Matters:
This article matters because it shows that we are trying to improve literacy rates in the United States.
How it matters to me:
This matters to me because its nice to know that our education is getting better in the US. Even though it has always been good, but now a days it's getting to be superb.
How it matters to the world:
This really matters to the world because with students becoming smarter that means that the future world will become better. This is because if people are smarter then there will b more people to invent new things that could revolutionize the future world.
